Chicago, Madrid, Tokyo and Rio de Janeiro – could the list of such respectable candidates in a race to win the bid to host the 2016 Summer Olympics somehow include Vilnius, Riga or Tallinn? Perhaps all the three cities would participate under one flag? You would say that to expect such a thing would be the same as to demolish the Gediminas Castle Tower and build a glass skyscraper instead. Nevertheless, even the once improbable seeming ideas might be realized some day. The President of the Lithuanian National Olympic Committee Artūras Poviliūnas recalled that the possibility of organizing the Summer Olympics in all the three Baltic States has once indeed been considered. Yet despite financial requirements there would emerge legal issues regarding organization of the games in different cities. Then one would need to change the very Olympic Charter where is set such a provision that it is only one city, not the state, not to mention an alliance of several states, eligible to host the Olympic games. Naturally, with big enthusiasm and desire one might pull down entire mountains, but first one must well consider and assess one’s capabilities.

Due to objective there might happen and it does that more than one city come to host the games. For instance, the circumstances sailing sport games are most often organized in a seaside city, while other sports in the other city. Different contests may be taking place in different cities – such exceptions are not excluded. However, the ultimate organiser of the games is still one city.

“The request for three capitals hosting the games simultaneously would be a new topic on the international level and would certainly have to wait rather long till it be solved,” assured the President of the Lithuanian National Olympic Committee.
