Architecture: „Architectural Fight against Pragmatism of Crisis“

The unique and overlooking creative panoramas of one of the highest Vilnius hills with ascending streets of K.Kalinauskas and J.Basanavičius have been and still are luring quite some architects. The eyes of real estate developers also target to this plum. Recently, an “Embassy House” was completed there, attracting the eye with its varied pilasters and roofs. Now, there are the embassies of Finland and Norway established there, complemented by some apartments and offices.

The ideology of the “Embassy House”, the very selection was largely determined by the plot location and shape. Head of the architects’ office “Performa” Valerijus Starkovskis, author of the “Embassy House” admitted that while designing the project he had to overcome quite some challenges. First of all, the plot is of a strange shape, with some blunt angle. Moreover, the “Embassy House” had to be abutted to the nearby residential house. In front of the building there is an Orthodox church, and next to it – the Wedding House. These objects have also influenced the architectural solution of the building.

The situation was puzzled also because of the diversified purpose of the object – residential, commercial and administrative. Then, the house had to be fit to the embassies too. The architects had to include all this into one “box” while preserving the stylistic completeness – to match different functions.

“Like in every building process, so it was with the “Embassy House”, that not everything went smoothly, and some things would even desolate. Maybe the main reason of all difficulties is the crisis. However, now even “fish stories” or personal inactivity are attributed to the downturn,” shared his experiences V. Starkovskis.

One of the first problems faced in the building was that, despite the downturn, the client started changing the project with the aim to enlarge the function of the building. Initially, the project of the building intended three different purposes of the building. The ground floor was intended and remained purposed for rent. Finland Embassy is higher, with some luxury apartments above it. Yet when the crisis gripped the building function got more detailed.
